SWIMMING

M.O.T.H.E.R.S. love outdoor swimming! Ocean swims occur throughout the late spring, summer, and early fall seasons.
  • New Bern Beach Access - is a public beach access on Fort Macon Road (near the green Oceanana Hotel and Pier) where M.O.T.H.E.R.S. meet to swim between the piers. (Total mileage = 1.5)

  • Sports Center has 2 pools; the indoor pool (year round) is a 25-yard pool and the outdoor pool (seasonal) is a 50-meter pool where the Masters Swim practices are held Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. We even have a swim coach who listens to our whining and tries to make us better swimmers. (See the Masters Swimming link below for more information on the Masters Swim Team.)

BIKING
M.O.T.H.E.R.S. are scattered all over the Crystal Coast during the week but can often be found gathering for group rides on Sunday mornings. Group rides usually start at the Sports Center (on 35th Street in Morehead City). Here are a few of our training rides:
  • Beach Loop starts at the Sports Center and follows Highway 24 East to Cape Carteret. A left turn at Highway 58 is followed by a high-rise bridge and a tailwind ride (usually) down the beach road. This section includes Emerald Isle, Salter Path, Indian Beach, Pine Knoll Shores, and Atlantic Beach. Another left turn at the AB Circle takes you off the island and back to the Sports Center. (Total mileage = 44)

  • Fort Macon is included in a variety of rides (often as an add-on piece from the beach loop). A quick loop to and from the fort from the Sports Center also provides a quick afternoon ride when time is tight. (Total mileage = 15)

RUNNING

M.O.T.H.E.R.S. run everywhere... the beach, the roads, the trails. Here are few favorites:
  • Beach Series Run is an organized running series that is scheduled during the summer months. (Follow the link below for more information on this running series.)

  • Turkey Trot Run begins at Shevans Park in Morehead City (17th Street, off Arendell Street) on Thanksgiving morning (8:00am). The route loops through the Morehead Waterfront, over the Morehead City Port Bridge to the Beaufort Waterfront and back to Shevans Park. (Total mileage = 8)

  • Jingle Bell Run also begins at Shevans Park for the same Morehead to Beaufort loop. The run is usually held on the Saturday before Christmas Day and begins at 8:00am.
